This numbered limited edition of 1,000 is the first book to feature one of Tuymans’s wall paintings, completed for an 2007 exhibition at Kabinett für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremerhaven, Germany, which he then documented with Polaroids throughout the entire process. Since 1994, Tuymans has painted more than 50 murals, most planned as temporary works, and therefore have not survived. Yet this artist’s wall pieces, evolving alongside the paintings, drawings, prints and photographs, form an important group within his oeuvre. As stated by Tuymans in conversation with Udo Kittelman,“For me, one of the interesting things about a wall paintings is that it relates more to the space than a [panel] painting does. Not that paintings act counter to a space, but what they are is more independent. A painting, or for that matter, an object, is bound to a certain format, whereas my mural paintings . . . are very large or even gigantic. Also I can work much more freely on the wall because I’m not so in awe of it as I am of a canvas, which is pretty strange. The great speed at which I can painting on this scale gives me the opportunity to make changes very quickly. I find that option, as well as the fact that the picture no longer has a frame in the usual sense, exciting. It’s still on a support but the support isn’t mine, but determined, say, by the dimensions of the architecture or by the material qualities of the wall surfaces.”
